My name is Russ Smith and I was fortunate enough to have been raised here in Idaho among the many beautiful sites and animals that are throughout our state. I will admit that I am an animal lover; However I also am a sportsmen and enjoy fishing and hunting to me the experience is not about the kill but about the hunt! Although I find myself more and more using a camera rather then a gun.

As someone who has always enjoyed drawing, it is sometimes difficult to call myself an artist. Being able to see a subject and capture it in one of my charcoal drawings is something I find enjoyable. The memories and the enjoyment that I get from seeing the finished drawing is what I hope to relay onto the people that view my work.

I have never received any official training, or taken courses to learn techniques. I do not try to do photo realistic drawing, I believe a drawing is a drawing. However it is my sincere hope that when someone views my work it will trigger a special memory or enlighten their soul as it does for me.

I began drawing when I was in grade school and continued into my late twenties it was not until 2009 that I started drawing again. I forgot how much enjoyment it brought to me. I also forgot just how long some drawings take to get the way I want them.

As you will find when viewing my work there is a special place in my heart for Wildlife; my favorite subject. Although I do enjoy drawing just about anything it seems that if there is an animal in it, it is just a little more special to me.

On my site you will find some of my charcoal drawings of wildlife, pets, livestock, people, portraits, deer, elk, wolf, bear, birds’ eagles, and more. While I enjoy drawing wildlife I also love to capture memories of people with my charcoal drawings.

I sell my hand drawings as well as prints which I number and sign along with sending a certificate of authenticity – you may also purchase Giclee prints along with the highest quality mats and frames of these charcoal drawings through my other website at russ@charcoal-drawings-prints.comregarding your method for payment. Once payment is completed, I will ship you a Beautifully Black Matted or Light Tan Matted original drawing or the print of the artwork (which ever you have purchased ready for your own framing.

These are hand drawn using charcoal and charcoal pencils on acid free, heavy weight, lightly textured paper. All my Charcoal Drawings are protected with fixative spray for lasting quality and durability.

Your Original Charcoal Drawing is sold by me the artist and signed by me the artist.

I especially enjoy drawing and characterizing special emotions featured in an individual’s face and eyes to reflect the mood of the moment as I see it presented. I will capture and characterize a great deal more than is openly evident in appearance for every individual, pet, animal, or any type of object; and, I represent that individualism in each drawing.

I like to draw being certain there are pleasing contrasts in charcoal tone and shading to bring out detail characteristic and depths. However I do not try to make them photo realistic; I like to have enough detail to spark a special memory yet leave enough detail out so that it requires your brain to fill in the details. I believe this gives the viewer a more personal experience.

Each custom charcoal drawing is a “one-of-a-kind”, original drawing for your unique display; or providing an exceptional gift for that very special person in your life.

I draw with charcoal to achieve a very specific and desired effect that renders detail characteristics and style of a subject’s facial features with a softer finish and illustrative expression.
