Idaho Artist Russ Smith’s charcoal drawings of birds of prey, eagles, owls, owl in flight, eagle in flight, American bald Eagle drawings and prints available

View some of these marvelous birds of prey as I have tried to capture them through my charcoal drawings. The owl as it prepares to land on an old tree trunk may be one of my favorite. However we can not forget about the America Bald Eagles either. Their beauty and grace whether they are resting in tree overlooking the valley below or soar high above a mountain lake one can not help but to feel as free as they must.

Bald Eagles although they were a rare sight when I was growing up here in Idaho have always touched my soul their memories are always in my mind. Thankfully today the Bald eagle is becoming a common sight.

Owls are a mysterious bird often roosting during the day in dark or heavily shaded areas. They are the silent fliers of the bird family and are usually spotted in the predawn and dusk hours my favorite times of the day. Owl seem to be a natural subject for charcoal drawings since they are bold and beautiful and at the same time soft and subtle.

Some may ask why much of my work is done using charcoal for those all I can say is charcoal allows me the freedom to apply rich dark texture where I feel emphasis is need yet allows me the freedom of transitioning that rich texture into as soft of a feel as needed. It is my goal not to have a photo realistic look but a look that can and will trigger a memory or a special encounter you may have had with these wonderful Bird of Prey
