Watching these great fishers are amazing as they soar above the water and then suddenly drop out of the air hitting the water and fish with amazing force. Ospreys a outstanding member of the birds of prey, are experts when it comes to fishing since they are such good fishers they eat little else! Fish will make-up around 99 percent of their diet. Because of this, these birds are found near rivers, lakes, ponds, and coastal waterways around the world. Ospreys have a very distinctive hunting tactic by diving to the water’s surface from some 30 to 100 feet (9 to 30 meters) up. They have gripping pads and long sharp claws on their feet to help them pluck the fish from the water with their curved claws. In flight, ospreys will orient the fish headfirst to ease wind resistance making it easier for them to travel long distances. Ospreys which are some times called Fish Hawks are sometimes confused with bald eagles; however they can be identified by their white under parts. They do have white heads however they have a distinctive black eye stripe that goes down the side of their face. Eagles and ospreys due frequent similar habitats where it is common to find them together along bodies of water where fish are plentiful, they some times will even battle for food. The Eagles will often force ospreys to drop their fish that they have caught and then steal the fish in midair. Check out all the print options for this drawing! |
