Now for day two of working on my drawing which I am calling a cougar in a tree at least for now.
I left off with this drawing after just doing a rough in of the body. Today I thought I would do a little clean up and add the tree and branch to my drawing.
You will notice that the tail and back of the cougar are still out lined with a dark layer of the willow charcoal.
This is intentional and I guess it is where I will start off working today I want to blend these areas to try and add depth to my drawing.
During this process I find myself using two items quite often. The first is a blending stump (a tightly rolled piece of paper)Which you can purchase or make yourself. Typically I will purchase mine since they are rolled much tighter then I am able to roll them.
I use small circular strokes working from the dark line to the inner parts of the drawing this will give me a blended area which flows smoothly from dark to light.
I like to use a soft vinyl eraser to go back and clean up the edges to my drawing. Most all art supply stores carry a wide variety of eraser even some which are pliable that you are able to form and shape to meet your needs.
I am still just trying to get a basic shape of the cougar at this point you will notice that the outer edges still seem a little dark but like I said I am only working on the basic shape at this time.
Next I will start working on the tree branch and the tree its self.
Using a soft charcoal pencil I will outline the tree branch and the trunk of the tree.
I will again use a blending stump but this time instead of working in small circular motions I will work in a curved pattern from the edge to the center of the branch.
I am trying to give the branch its basic shape while at the same time give it some depth.
I continue this process until I am happy with the shade and shape and I now have the basic branch the way I want it for now
